The Federal Trade Commission and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau earlier this year issued a joint report to Congress detailing their respective actions to address deceptive debt collection tactics for 2017. The FTC resolved 10 cases against 42 defendants and obtaining more than $64 million in judgments, according to Jim Elliott, assistant regional director for the FTC’s Southwest region. The CFPB, meanwhile, handled more than 84,000 debt collection complaints. Lender liability when a third-party partner is the one accused of violating the law played a key roles in many cases.
